剧情介绍：

　　故事从唐朝贞观年间开始讲述。
　　在唐太宗身边被立为才人的武媚娘在默默无闻地度过了十余年的宫廷生活之后，终于遇到了一个另唐太宗刮目相看的机会。随着太宗的重视，她与太子李治也渐渐熟悉，两人对对方的印象都非常深刻，并且很有好感。
　　唐太宗驾崩，武媚娘按照宫规，在长安城外的感业寺出家做了尼姑。不甘于如此度过此生的她，在高宗李治到感业寺上香的时候，为自己创造了一个重新入宫的机会。随着儿子的出世，她由宫女到昭仪，又由昭仪成为皇后，以她特殊的智慧和勇气，一步步扫清了障碍，肃清了宿敌，稳稳地坐镇在后宫的凤鸾之上。
　　巩固了自己的地位之后，武皇后开始帮助丈夫临朝理政。她果断地扫除异己，使政归中宫。在这期间，她向皇帝提出了十二项政治主张，就是历史上著名的“建言十二事”，高宗李治对她的主张赞不绝口，诏准施行。夫妇二人形同合璧治理国家，时称“双圣”。
　　在高宗体弱患病，不能临朝的情况下，武皇后江山重任一肩挑，显示出了惊人的统治才能。大唐帝国以无比强盛的姿态崛立于世界民族之林。
　　高宗驾崩以后，君昏朝暗，已是太后的她毅然罢黜了既无能又自私的中宗李显，以一言九鼎的气魄，剿平了起自宗室的叛乱，用矫枉过正的方法迅速将反对势力匡正，国家的局势一天天好转，人们越来越拥戴这位有胆有识的女人。
　　为了守住江山，武太后应天命，顺民意，即位做了皇帝。于是中国历史上有了第一位，也是唯一的女皇帝。
　　做了皇帝以后，武皇更加大刀阔斧，推行一系列政治主张，并取得了显著的政绩。她一改科举旧制，开创了殿试，不拘一格起用人才；她开设了武举科，为军队培养有素之人；她知人善任，逢才必用，朝堂之上人才济济；她在全国范围内大力倡农促耕，减税轻赋，先使民富而后致国强；她面对外侮毫不退却，一举扫静边陲；她尊佛敬道，平息了佛道纷争；使她闻过责己，力主平反冤狱，把包括狄仁杰在内的一大批治国贤才从酷吏手中拯救出来……
　　最后，当她的生命快要走到尽头的时候，她没有让武氏后人继承大统，而是把天下还给了李唐。她给后人留下了一座无字的丰碑……
