剧情介绍：

　　主要讲述的是进入中年的汉武帝和汉室新一代栋梁之间的故事。
　　步入中年的汉武帝刘彻，痛感到光阴催人，理想远大而天不永年。一批股肱之臣纷纷下世。汉武帝大胆起用年青一代─
　　桑弘羊胸有成竹而不动声色，他将盐铁收为官营，坚实了大汉的财源；张汤的儿子张安锋芒毕露，独骑闯夜郎国，使"夜郎自大"的国王归顺汉朝，稳定西南；当年长城边卖"羊肉梢子面"的老板儿子卜式，已成为关内最大的牧场主，慷慨捐资，毁家纾国；归顺汉朝的浑邪王之子金日单力驯劣马，为汉武帝识拔，任为军马总监，为之平息叛乱，屡立奇功……
　　而汉武帝周围，一批年青人也已长大成人：卫子夫的儿子太子刘据、卫子夫的女儿元元公主、李陵和胭脂留在中原的儿子李汉、霍去病和秋婵的女儿祁连，大将军季安世的儿子季擒虎，江都王的女儿江都郡主……他们抱着新的理想，展开了年青一代的故事。
　　但最后汉武帝为求长生不老听信谣言，太子由于年轻无知反被小人利用，致使父子反目成仇，妻离子散。晚年的汉武帝终于体会到了什么叫做"孤家寡人"。
